the middle of the week
The Middle Of The Week, Nicholas van Woert's first solo exhibition at the Sierra Arts Gallery opens September 20th and continues through November 12, 2004. A reception will be held on Friday, September 24th at 5pm. The exhibition includes large-format still photographs and sculpture. Van Woert’s recent major work Blind Faith (2004), which consists of an entire Braille bible measuring 7 feet in length, will be on display.
Van Woert (b. Reno, Nevada, 1979) uses photography to document installations and performances that have occured outside in ordinary public places. He bring places and events that we all know of but never experience to our attention. Heaven and Hell, life and death, the conflation of opposites, are key to his conceptual approach. The Reno-based artist has been the recipient of a Sierra Arts Professional Artist Grant (2003), KUNR 88.7 Artist in Residence interview (2003), and Reno News and Review interview (2003).
