Piles

A pile is a heap of things laid one on top of another. A pile is also a synonym for a hemorrhoid. One definition of the word is an accumulation of objects in a particular order and the other is a growth caused by a reaction to excessive pressure.

I liken these sculptures to totem poles but i refer to them as Piles. Like a totem pole they are an accumulation of objects stacked vertically that tell a story about the culture that made them. Where the indeginious cultures of the Pacific Northwest had a surplus of wood with which to make their sculptures, modern culture having almost used up the natural resources has a surplus of junk. These scultpures are piles of junk. When I started making these Piles I did not know how much they relied on a culture that puts so much pressure on itslef to produce, acquire and abandon consumable goods and information, but it is clear to me now.
